Giving back wisdom

I was supposed to write this up a few days ago, but things happen for a reason. Therefore, with the debut of my first music video I would like to take time to highlight another director, Mr. Bryan Barber. If you do not know who he is, i'm sure you know his work.

He has directed almost all of Outkast music video along with numerous other artist videos such as the Game, LeToya, and Kelly Clarkson. His biggest project to date is his movie Idlewild.

Last week I had the opportunity to meet him. He came to visit Dr. E and took a moment out of his schedule to speak to our class. Sharing wisdom that is only acquired through years of experience, what more could one ask for. Check out some of his work below.

Thank you for the support

Thanks to all my readers out there. We have reached 1000 hits on the blog. Thanks for the support. Keep reading and ill keep supplying entertaining material.

School Daze

Everything is a buzz in the AUC as school kicks off for yet another semester. At the beginning and end of each school year as I matriculate through Morehouse, I always like to watch School Daze. Spike Lee did a phenominal job in depicting the AUC and the HBCU experience in general through this movie. No matter how many times I watch this movie I always walk away with a new understanding of the messages Spike conveys to the audiance. So as I finish up my first day of classes, it wouldn't be right to close out my day with out watching one of my favorite movies. In the mean time, check out Zek as he shows you the kick off event of the school year @ OntheApplebox.com

HOLLYWOOD
(thinking to himself)

So I finally get a professional camera for the whole weekend. I was super geeked, really felt like my hard work was starting to pay off. I didn't get the camera till late afternoon Friday. Seeing as it was too late to try to set up a shoot, I just threw the camrea over my shoulder and shot what ever I could. Got some good footage but noting significant. Saturday I didn't have the camera because it was needed for another shoot. Not letting time go to waste, I used Saturday to try to set up a shoot for one of my shorts on Sunday. Everything was going well Sunday. Got up, got to church, got the camera back on time and got everything set up for the shoot.when it comes time to get started...........NO ONE IS THERE!!!! I make a few calls to see where everyone is and of course no one is any where to be found. Time to move to plan number 2. I call of my friend Bobby Cash (School House Hustlas) who is always down for anything when it come to work or money. Soon as I call him an introduce the idea , first question he ask is "what can we shoot and what do you need." We devised a plan and he started putting things into motion. Then around 12am I get a phone call saying it wasn't going to happen tonight because people where acting salty. Well there went that idea.
Right now I feel like I'm doing what I'm supposed to do, I'm seizing every opportunity, but when it comes to shooting my personal projects my actors fall short. I had the camera, the set, and the script, but no actors!!! Therefore, my goal for this week is to surround myself with individuals who are serious about their craft and dependable.

What was he thinking?

Here's an idea...........

I found out about this show through the annoying On Demand segments that Comcast runs as you search through the on demand menu. Usually I pay no mind to them in efforts to keep my sanity, but the clip they showed had me on the ground laughing. So I decided to check out the show and I was hooked after the first show. Some of the sketches are a little out there but you will enjoy it none the less. You can catch "The Whitest Kids You Know" on the IFC channel.

Creamie Says

Check out the finish product from my friend Eziekial Phillips.

Don't Feed the Animals

Last week I went with my friend DJ Era to Gorilla Zoe's album listening party. The event was held at the Atlanta Zoo, in the gorilla viewing deck. Of course, you know I had the camera with me :-). So check out the fun we had. Let me know what you think about the clip, I shot and edited everything.

Who's your mother?

Picture this, the setting is the year 1928 where racial segregation is very prominent and the ability of voting privileges for women is very recent. Male superiority and chauvinism is the way of life as well as the increasing need to gain power is a dominant factor. Los Angeles, California resides manger of local phone operations Christine Collins (played by Angelina Jolie) who is making a decent living for herself and her son Walter. After a long day of work and entrusting that her son will behave while away, Christine notices that Walter has been added to the list of many children who turn up missing. Collins then gets word that her son has returned but then comes face to face with an orphan that is posing as Walter Collins that happens to be a set up by the LAPD. After attempting to persuade Captain J. J. Jones (Played by Jeffery Donovan) Jones tells her that the little boy has changed but he is indeed her child. The determination of this woman with the help from the local reverend, forces her to go to the media about proven instances that this stranger/orphan is not her son Walter. This attempt leads her in a mental institution arranged by Captain Jones, but there is a secret back story that could or could not shed light on this situation.

Based off of a true story, this leads the audience in shock of how corrupted the LAPD has been over the years even before the Rodney King beatings of 1991. Even with all these instances of the misuse of power. The question on the mind of many is posed as the inquiry of the boundaries of that of not only the local government but the national and international government as well. How can one give a parent the wrong child on purpose and convince the parent that this orphan is their “developed” or “evolved” child. Even with there being a difference in location, that environment doesn’t physically alter the appearance of a person as drastic as the time span of two months. This movie gives a rather grim look into how the government manipulates people in order to portray a squeaky clean image.

So why rent this movie? This movie keeps the audience in suspense while watching Jolie re-enact not only the emotional stress of a worried mother but the audience is able to view Jolie become a member of the mental institution as she previously did in her 1999 film Girl Interrupted starring side by side Brittany Murphy and Winona Ryder. Changeling will keep you guessing about the next move while leaving you disgusted in our nations crooked police force which contradicts their oath of “To serve and protect”.

Bowling with Lil' Wayne & Katie Couric

What time of year is it? You guessed it......Awards Season!!! This Wednesday at 9pm CBS will air it's "All Access Grammy Special," where Katie Couric will be interviewing rapper Lil' Wayne. With Bill O'Reilly & Dennis Miller recently criticizing the free speech of Young Jeezy, it will be interesting to see the development of this interview. Judging from the clip here are my predictions:
  • Lil' Wayne begins the interview with some class, seeming as if he has emerged from the streets of New Orleans.
  • Katie Couric engages Wayne quite will, but you can tell she is airing on the side of caution probably with a can of mace within reach.
  • Midway through the interview, Wayne's good ole purple juice will kick in and let the Wayne-izms begin.
  • Over all it wont be as intense as O'Reilly going after those he loves to hate, yet it should make for some good luaghs.
Oh almost forgot, it is rumored that we might hear a freestyle from Katie Couric.

It Was All A Dream

BRAVO!!! Notorious is by far one of the best rapper biography films I have seen in a long time. The production was superb. Kevin Ladson, the prop manger, nailed every detail from the phones to the magazine covers. The wordrobe and costume department had all the old coogi sweaters and leather jerseys you could think of. Everything came togehter to give you the ambiance of standing next to Big in Brooklyn in the 90's.
An outstanding job by Jamal Woolard who plays Biggie in the movie. Before the movie came out
my friend Winston said, "Who ever is going to play the role of Big has all of Brooklyn on his back. Either he's going to be great and get nothing but love or it's going to be all bad." Well, I dont think Jamal has anything to worry about after such a spot on performance. Then there is Naturi Naughton who plays Lil' Kim. Although, there are many who are disgruntaled by her potrayl
of the "Queen B," I believe she did a fantastic job for such a risky role as her first major film apperance (what a long way from 3LW). Last but not least, is Derek Luke who plays Diddy. I was a little skeptical at first when watching the previews, but seeing him on screne was a different experience. Derek Luke can now say he is the best Diddy impersionator ever. Seeing him dance around the stage and
deliever such lines as "Drop me in the forest and im coming out with two furs and 5 pounds bigger," only thing that could make his character more complete is hearing him say "Take that, take that, take that, it's bad boy" just one time.

Outstanding Performance Goes To?
Derek Luke for Diddy
Jamal Woolard for Big
Naturi Naughton for Lil Kim
Antonique Smith for Faith Evans

My Weekend Picks

Notorious

Another project from Diddy in association with MTV. This project has the potential to be a great film if executed right. I'm hoping that this cast of breakthrough actors along with a few veterans will be able to rise above and not let this movie become just another sub par rapper bio flick.

My Bloody Valentine 3D

For those who don't know, I am really into horror films right now. Recently they have been the only films to provide captivating plots and unexpected twist, minus the cliche collection of idiotic mistakes by the characters. Therefore, when I found out about this movie I was super GEEKED. Not only because it was a horror flick, but because it is in 3D!!! This is going to be an experience that you will not soon forget. Imagine if you saw Texas Chain Saw Massacre in 3D when it came out, and you thought you couldn't sleep before!

Maybe even yellow, in the sun but not white.......

Disowning Claire Trailer from ac abbott on Vimeo.

I found this this morning on another one of my favorite blogs (smokingsection.net shout out to the TSS Crew). It looks like an interesting twist on Guess Who's Coming to Dinner from our generations perspective, highlighting the racial divide that still plagues the American culture. I'm going to do some research and see what else I can find from AC Abbott along with the full video. Stay tuned

80's Baby Box Office

All those born or that grew up in the 80's, do you look around feeling as if you are the big kid of the neighborhood that all the little kids try imitate?  For most of you young cluckers, being an 80's Baby is some sort of a new phenoma or fashion statement. However, for a select few of us we are blessed to be the ginuwine article. So while everyone is running to the mall to get the latest vintage wear, we just reach in the closet, dust off a few articles of clothing and watch the rest of you go nuts when we arrive. This post is dedicated to all my real 80's Babies as we take a trip "Back to the Future" to look at a few movies you may have forgotten about.

Beverly Hills Cop

1984 started the comical accounts of Alex Foley, a Detroit detective, helping out in the investigation of his friend's death thousands of miles out of his jurisdiction in Beverly Hills California.

E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial

ET...........Phone home (no Wayne is not the originator sorry). No one can forget seeing Elliot take off on his bike and fly pass the moon as he tries to save E.T from the police.

Batman

While everyone is still in awe of Heath Ledgers performance as joker, let's not forget the original Joker, Mr. Anger Management himself Jack Nicholson. Don't get me wrong, Dark Knight (link to best of 08) is phenomenal movie and Heath Ledger gave an impeccable performance. But hands down Jack takes the cake! (Who do you think was the best? Vote for your favorite Joker, right under the subscribe on the right side of the page)

The Breakfast Club

Who thought detention could ever be this fun. Five misfits serving Saturday detention in the school library, what possible trouble could they get into? Obviously you have no idea who you are dealing with.

Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure

Yo can not convince me that you wouldn't enjoy having the ability to step into a phone booth and go where ever you please. For those of you who don't know, think of Ashton Kutcher and Sean William Scott staring in Jumper, but using a telephone booth to travel through time. Trust me, you are in for one totally awesome adventure.

Back to the Future

"Good morning, look at the valedictorian
scared of the future, as I hop in the Deleroean"
Good Morning by Kanye West

Had no idea what Mr. West was referencing did you? Watch as Marty McFly and Doc Brown race through time in one of the Flyist cars know to man, in the 80's take on the Time Machine. I wish I had a car like that for my first car.

Risky Business

Parents away for the weekend, house to yourself, and enough grocery money to last you a month mmmmmmm.............what to do? All I can say is Tom Cruise might have been spending to much time with Snoop and Dujan Won.

Welcome to Eye Wonder

"Its been a long time coming," word to Sam Cooke, trust by the time you are reading this it will have been changed who knows how many times, but here we are. Welcome to Eye Wonder, where the eye tells the story. I'm Hollywood (as my friends call me), an aspiring (for now) director and producer. My goal is to one day match if not exceed more sales as a director than Tim Story, be able to have the vision of Spike Lee, and the longevity of Clint Eastwood.

This blog is an insight to my journey as a film maker. As we all know in order to be a master of your craft, you must study and know your craft as much as you can. Eye Wonder Films is my craft, my brain child, meant to help me learn and in doing so spread the knowledge. What good is knowledge if you keep it to yourself. Therefore, here you will be able to find lively reviews of movies in the theater and on DVD. For fellow aspiring film makers, I will be posting how to guides on making film equipment on a budget (God knows nobody has any money or funding with the state our economy is in) and other essential tools to help you reach your goals as a film maker. Also, if you are a film maker feel free to send me your work. I will be featuring aspiring film makers and their work from all sectors of the movie creation process. Lastly, as opportunities present themselves, I will post interviews with people within the Television and Film Industry.

My vision for this blog is to create a medium where aspiring film makers can gain exposure. A medium where when you are sitting at home on a Friday night or have a "hot" date and you are thinking to your self "what movie should I see?" you will visit Eye Wonder to get an idea of what movie to see in the theaters or rent from block buster. A medium where knowledge is shared and exchanged. All in all ENJOY and SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS (feedback is always a good thing). Thank you for visiting but like any good director you must know when to yell "CUT."

Do you know where your man is?

I found this movie in a friends collection when I was going out of my mind not having cable. Had never heard of it before, but the cover looked interesting and I figured it would be something new to see. The movie turned out to be very interesting. A crazy plot about a middle class family who moves from Atlanta to Philadelphia when the father receives a job promotion. It is when they arrive in the city of brotherly love that things become interesting. With the mother clinging to her faith trying to hold her family together while friendships and relationships are put to the test.

This movie is a great conversational piece, dealing with many different subject matters such as faith, substance abuse, infidelity, and STDs. Therefore, I'm want everyone to find a copy this week and watch it. Next week I will post a few follow up post pertaining to different aspects of the movie. But I want to give you a chance to see it before I start giving away most of the movie.
